It’s a common myth that hardware development and software development are somehow mutually exclusive. Or that excellence in one precludes excellence in the other. We’re happily busting that myth as we transform from hardware start-up to software grown-up over the course of a year. How does this happen? With a culture of rapid prototyping, a focus on human-centered design, a commitment to excellence, and a little help from our friends at AWS.
ALWAYS BE PROTOTYPING
When customers and student groups visit our office workshop with the question, “What makes ProGlove ProGlove?” the answer is always the same: “We’re always prototyping.” Whenever we have a great idea, we first prototype it with simple models made of wood or other material in the office. This fast approach allows us to take early concepts to our customers for testing. Our philosophy of putting the human worker at the center of everything we do, and involving our customers in the product development process, helps us to make the right business decisions.
ITERATE THE VISION
A year ago we decided to deepen our capabilities in software. Suddenly the term “rapid prototyping in the workshop” took on new meaning. As a start-up we were sometimes perceived as the “New Kids on the Software-Block” but we’d realized there were a lot of insights to be had with the data capture from our hardware. With MARK barcode scanners our customers gain considerable efficiency and flexibility on the shop floor. So, the logical next step is to provide new digital data points for the back office, where our customers are able to build their own Human Digital Twin. This twinning is essentially a software lens that helps companies see and understand their operations in a whole new way.
AWS took interest in what we were doing. They wrote a blog post about it.
With AWS we found a partner which provides us with years of world-class experience and support. They understand start-ups, scale-ups, and the rapid prototyping mindset. We shared our vision with the AWS team and connected our engineering teams with their solutions architects to design and build the underpinnings of ProGlove Cloud. The goal is to integrate the platform with ongoing processes and data from ERP, WMS, and our wearables systems. The purpose: to help identify threats, bottlenecks, and opportunities to reduce expenses.
“Besides their exceptional technology, AWS has supported us in all stages of developing this product. Their account team dove deep into the details of our products and services. Their prototyping team offered recommendations that helped us build our first cloud platform. We estimate that this insight saved us 12 weeks of work, improved our solution and accelerated our go to market.” – Keith Ball, VP Engineering at ProGlove.
TRANSFORM YOUR BUSINESS
What can we suggest to you as you develop your business analytics capabilities?
• Stay true to prototyping! You learn with every iteration
• Find partners who shares the same values and speed
• Always be customer-focused and create the solutions that will matter for them – Even if people think you are the “New Kid on the Software-Block”
